🌊 Sea Freight Update

📉 Trade Disruptions and Tariffs

  • U.S.-China Trade War: The imposition of a 145% tariff on Chinese imports by the U.S. has led to a sharp decline in container shipments. Major ports like Los Angeles anticipate a one-third decrease in arrivals, with some carriers cancelling up to 50% of sailings from China.
  • Red Sea Crisis: Houthi attacks have caused a 90% decrease in container shipping through the Red Sea, forcing vessels to reroute around the Cape of Good Hope. This detour adds approximately 10 days and $1 million in fuel costs per voyage.
  • Extended Transit Times and Elevated Costs
  • Due to ongoing security concerns in the Red Sea, major shipping lines continue to reroute vessels around the Cape of Good Hope, adding approximately 12–16 days to transit times between Europe and South Africa. This detour has led to increased fuel consumption and operational costs, contributing to higher freight rates.
  • Capacity Constraints and Rate Adjustments
  • The rerouting has caused capacity constraints on certain lanes, prompting carriers to implement General Rate Increases (GRIs) and Peak Season Surcharges (PSS) to manage demand and maintain service levels.

🚢 Industry Trends

  • Decarbonization Efforts: Shipping companies are investing in alternative fuels like green ammonia and methanol. Maersk aims to operate at least 25 green-methanol-powered vessels by 2027.
  • Digital Transformation: Adoption of AI and blockchain technologies is enhancing route optimization and cargo tracking. Ports like Rotterdam are leveraging predictive analytics to reduce congestion.
  • Supply Chain Resilience: Companies are diversifying manufacturing locations, with increased ocean freight activity from emerging markets like Vietnam and Brazil.

✈️ Airfreight Update

📦 E-commerce and Capacity Constraints

  • E-commerce Surge: E-commerce now accounts for approximately 50% of the air freight market, driven by global sales projected to reach $6.56 trillion in 2025. This surge is straining available cargo capacity.
  • Aircraft Supply Issues: Production delays from manufacturers like Boeing and Airbus are limiting the growth of the cargo fleet, exacerbating capacity challenges.
  • Capacity Fluctuations and Rate Volatility
  • Air freight between Europe and South Africa is experiencing capacity fluctuations due to seasonal demand and geopolitical factors. While some routes have seen increased capacity with the resumption of passenger flights, others remain constrained, leading to volatile spot rates.
  • Regulatory Developments
  • The European Commission has introduced reforms to simplify the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and sustainability reporting rules, potentially impacting air freight operations between Europe and South Africa.

🌍 Geopolitical and Environmental Factors

  • Middle East Tensions: Conflicts in the region have disrupted key air routes, leading to increased reliance on air freight to bypass maritime delays. This shift has reversed traditional pricing patterns, with backhaul rates surpassing fronthaul rates.
  • Sustainability Initiatives: The EU’s ReFuelEU initiative mandates a minimum of 2% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) blending at EU airports starting in 2025, potentially increasing air freight costs by 1-3%.
